Voluntary Payroll Protection Plan (VPPP)

Have you missed time from work in the last few years due to personal illness? Did it adversely affect your finances? Would you like to avoid this tragedy, or a recurrence?
Odds are at least once during the next ten years, you will suffer from a personal illness or injury that requires you to be absent from work for a significant amount of time. If that happens and you are an active member of the Denver Teachers’ Club Voluntary Payroll Protection Plan, you will be eligible to receive up to $60 a day in benefits.

How does the VPPP work?

You pay premiums of $10/month ($120/year) through payroll deduction. When you suffer from a long-term illness or injury, we will pay you $60 per days claimed, up to 100 days/year if vested. During your first year of membership, you are eligible to receive five days of benefits. In your second year, you can receive up to ten days of benefits. Your benefit eligibility increases at a rate of 5 days per year through your fifth year of membership. From your sixth year forward, you are eligible to receive up to 100 days of benefits.

When do VPPP benefits begin?

If you are an employee who receives ten paid sick days per year from the district, your VPPP benefits begin on your 11th day of absence. If you are an employee who receives 12 paid sick days per year from the district, your VPPP benefits begin on your 13th day of absence.

How are benefits accessed?

You simply file a claim like you would with any other insurance provider, supplying your dates of illness, the reason and a physician signature. Then, within four to six weeks, you receive a check from the Denver Teachers’ Club.

How much will I receive in benefits?

During the first five years of membership, your available benefit will increase in 5-day increments as follows:

  • Year 1 – 5 days – $300
  • Year 2 – 10 days – $600
  • Year 3 – 15 days – $900
  • Year 4 – 20 days – $1,200
  • Year 5 – 25 days – $1,500
  • Year 6 – 100 days – $6,000

Once you are fully vested (six years of continuous membership), you are eligible to collect up to 100 days of benefits per year, not to exceed 200 days in any five-year period.

Who is eligible for membership in the DTC VPPP?

Any full-time contract employee of the Denver Public Schools, regardless of classification, receiving pay throughout the year on a bi-weekly or monthly basis.

Remember, we are a separate entity from the DPS and the DCTA, so these benefits will be paid to you in addition to your regular pay from the district and/or any benefits you may receive from the Sick Leave Bank. Injuries covered under Workers’ Compensation are not eligible for DTC VPPP benefits.

Personal illness does not have to result in financial hardship.
